My experience at the Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention

I went to the Selangor Smart City & Digital Economy Convention last weekend, and it left me hopeful for the future of gaming and game development in Malaysia! I got the chance to play and talk with some of the local game developers in the convention, and I think they're really doing a great job!

This is the first time I've ever went to such a convention before, but this is the 4th Smart City & Digital Economy Convention. There were quite a lot of stuff going on in this convention. There were esports tournaments, stalls selling books and merchandise and also several booths where you can try out games.

I went around the hall and looked around for a bit and I found some pretty promising games made by local developers!

One of the games I tried was called Re:Legend, a pretty ambitious game by Magnus Games Studio, it is a JRPG style game with monster fighting, taming, farming, fishing, mining and more! So basically its a merge between Digimon World and Harvest Moon, 2 of my long time favorite games, which is why I am looking forward to the actual release of the game, which will be on all platforms in the future, but currently it is in Early Access on Steam, for the price of RM 49, which is pretty reasonable.

The art and graphics are pretty decent, very reminiscent of JRPGs, there are so many things you can do in the game too. but here are some downsides, as an Early Access title. it is still fraught with bugs and technical issues, the combat was ok, but still a bit rough around the edges and not impactful enough.

For people who can't stand an incomplete game, you should probably wait it out a bit, it should get better, because the community and the developers are quite nice and helpful.

If you're interested in the game you can check it out here:

Here's another game made locally, by Streamline Games, this is a co-op game which you can play with up to 4 players, its another game with really cute and colorful graphics. Bake N Switch has quite a unique but simple style, you pick up these cute little dough creatures and you lob them into a stove and bake them, throw in more to build up the dough's size and your score.

You can either choose to work together with your friends in co-op mode or sabotage each other in PvP. truly a game that will bring hours of fun with friends and family.

Perhaps it was because I played with with the devs at the booth, on a unspecified level, I didn't quite get the objective of the game at first, well, the means of getting to it was clear enough, make big dough and throw them into the stove and get a high-score. But I didn't really know why I was doing it, until I went and look at the website for the game.

But overall, it seems like quite an enjoyable co-op game. Gotta applaud the devs for being brave enough to make a local co-op game in an age where there are so few of them, I'll definitely get this game when it comes out on Steam.

All in the, the convention has been a fun experience, for those who are interested in going for the next one, you can keep an eye out on SITEC (Selangor Information Technology and E-commerce Council), as they were the ones who organized it this time round.
