Ryse: Son of Rome, Play as a Roman Soldier! (Review)

Ryse: Son of Rome, Play as a Roman Soldier!

Ryse: Son of Rome is a hack & slash game where you play as a Roman soldier, it is pretty story-focused and linear, but the story could be quite confusing as it is told, and there really isn’t much that will stick as the story goes.
So, it is actually a pretty bare bones game, not gonna be worth It at the full price, but at its current price, it is definitely worth a buy.

Environment
The game is very linear, so there’s actually not many places you can go to in-game, but the places that do get to walk around in looks very nice, especially right at the very start, where you are put into a crazy warzone. It just looks so overwhelmingly nice, and the parts where you run around a city killing people, yeah, the game looks very nice, it is one of its main selling points.

Gameplay
The gameplay itself is centered on hacking and slashing, there is little to no exploration in-game, or anything else, other than the combat, but the combat is extremely satisfying, there’s the sword combo, shield attacks, dodges and deflects, but the most important thing, is the execution, executing enemies can feel very satisfying, especially given that there are quite a few execution animations, so you won’t get bored of always seeing the same one.
The downsides of the game are that the enemy soldier variety is really lacking, and you basically keep killing the same 4 enemy types over and over again. Also, the boss fights are really not that great, as this is a low fantasy setting game, the bosses will not be all that epic or weird.
Another thing is that, although using a sword and shield like a Roman looks cool and all, but having only one type of weapon for the whole game feels really bland, I would’ve loved trying out something else, maybe a spear, or daggers or a huge two-handed sword maybe?

Story
The story can be quite confusing if you’re not paying attention, which I didn’t at the first playthrough, and I was honestly confused when I seemingly got to new chapters. The story starts from the very end, when the barbarians are storming the palace and you’re escorting the emperor to a safe place and starts to flashback to when the main character, Marius, just became a soldier. And the story goes on from then until it catches back up to the part at the palace, though it was quite confusing, it does provide a bit of incentive for you to play through the game to see how the scene at the palace ends.
Although, the finality of the final scene seems to indicate that the game not be getting a sequel, which is a pity, because I feel like this game has a really good foundation that can be built on in the future, but it’s been 6 years since its release and nothing yet.

Summary/Conclusion
Pros
+Great graphics
+Extremely satisfying combat
+Easy to play and master

Cons
-Linear gameplay
-Very short playtime
-Lacks enemy variety
-Story not very engaging

Graphics: 8/10

Overall: 7/10

A short and simple hack & slash game, if you’re looking for great variety and content, this game is not gonna be the one, but if you just want to indulge in mindless combat and executions, this game is absolutely a good one to pick up.
